Motif · Book 7, This Inevitable Ruin
The river in Carl's head
A stream that has always murmured, louder in heat and muted only by rest, which the sixth floor names: 'The water is running.' It roars at the Grand Canyon in memory, at Bea's hologram, at the name Ferdinand, when Gideon's team dies because Carl asked. 'The sink is running. We're not supposed to let it run.'

Progression
Beside D'Nadia it says 'It’s so loud, Carl. It’s so loud' (ch. 26). It is a torrent that is not water (ch. 62); it is souls, and it always runs down (ch. 65); Diah's cold river runs through the children's room (ch. 72); after the ring, Carl hears Eris's laugh in it (ch. 86).
