Milk

The Cookbook's sixth-edition author: a xenopus asleep for seasons in a hidden calligraphy guild on the ninth floor, muted by her own scroll, whose notes — on portals, on country bosses, a map Priestly improved on, a stew for her young — Carl has been reading since the fourth floor. He finds her behind a wall panel ('Child, come here') and cries into her wings; kidnapped on Rosetta's advice, she writes words of power over Donut's tattoo and gives Carl a skin of Stayfast Ink and a fountain pen.

Series arc

Through book 7

Her interlude: a xenopus asleep for seasons in a hidden calligraphy guild, muted by her own scroll, woken by a vampire and a goat, a power word burned into her wrist, a knife at her throat and a map of the club's exits; sixth edition; free only after 333 uses (B7 ch. 26). Carl finds her guild behind a wall panel: 'Child, come here' — and cries into her wings (B7 ch. 55). Kidnapped on Rosetta's advice (B7 ch. 56), loosely bound at the Nest (B7 ch. 73), she writes words of power over Donut's tattoo in black and purple ink and raises the spell to 15 (B7 ch. 75). A hand on Carl's cheek: recipes she wrote after changing inks faded and were gone when they were needed; 'No single recipe is a feast in itself'; Stayfast Ink, 825 ml, that not even the death of a star will fade, and a fountain pen; and a reminder that whatever he writes in the Book of Voodoo goes to everyone who has it (B7 ch. 75). Her contract fulfilled, she has the departing crawlers paint their skills onto pages, three each — one for Carl, one for Donut, one for the original book — and says goodbye: 'Burn it all to the ground'; Carl hugs his fellow author (B7 ch. 85).

Through book 3

Her sixth-edition note on portals, read on the Iron Tangle: dozens of kinds that all work differently — doors you do not know are there, entryways you only touch, ones that drag you in if you go slack — and 'Teleport traps are the worst' (B3 ch. 27).

Through book 4

Priestly's note: 'I will draw a map for you. The one Milk drew is still good, but it lacks detail' (B4 ch. 33).

Through book 5

A sixth-edition note on country bosses: the Treasure Map they drop — 'My advice. Don’t pick it up' — and a fight in a low-ceilinged cave where over 400 faced the boss and fewer than 50 survived; 'This was by design. Of that I am certain' (B5 ch. 61).

Through book 6

A stew for her young (B6 ch. 13); 'What the fuck. What the fuck. What the fuck' (B6 ch. 46).

By book

Milk in book 3 — The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook

Her sixth-edition note on portals, read on the Iron Tangle: dozens of kinds that all work differently — doors you do not know are there, entryways you only touch, ones that drag you in if you go slack — and 'Teleport traps are the worst' (ch. 27).

Milk in book 4 — The Gate of the Feral Gods

Priestly's note: 'I will draw a map for you. The one Milk drew is still good, but it lacks detail' (ch. 33).

Milk in book 5 — The Butcher's Masquerade

A sixth-edition note on country bosses: the Treasure Map they drop — 'My advice. Don’t pick it up' — and a fight in a low-ceilinged cave where over 400 faced the boss and fewer than 50 survived, distrusting each other afterwards; 'This was by design. Of that I am certain' (ch. 61).

Milk in book 6 — The Eye of the Bedlam Bride

Five sixth-edition notes on this floor: one on the stew she could not make for her young this year, and one wishing to cook a feast for the whole galaxy — 'I wish for them all to choke on our pain' (ch. 13), in the chapter where Rosetta's interview shows a doctored photo of a jug marked Milk and Carl wonders if it is a message (ch. 13); a fight she cannot describe, 'What the fuck. What the fuck. What the fuck' (ch. 46); stairwells cannot be moved into an inventory or destroyed, and Herot's note says Milk is correct — they may be gated but never removed (ch. 61); and never use Sheol fire on a demon (ch. 63).

Milk in book 7 — This Inevitable Ruin

Her interlude: a xenopus asleep for seasons in a hidden calligraphy guild, muted by her own scroll, woken by a vampire and a goat, a power word burned into her wrist, a knife at her throat and a map of the club's exits; sixth edition; free only after 333 uses (ch. 26).
