The river in Carl's head
A stream that has always murmured, louder in heat and muted only by rest, which the sixth floor names: 'The water is running.' It roars at the Grand Canyon in memory, at Bea's hologram, at the name Ferdinand, when Gideon's team dies because Carl asked. 'The sink is running. We're not supposed to let it run.'

Louder every day. Oshun and Inle offer to drain the canyon (ch. 15); 'Quiet, quiet. Don't be so loud' as a gauntlet forms at Cascadia (ch. 21); a spider names it — 'A broken window still lets the wind inside' — and then finds it through a simulation's safeties: 'It's the river in my mind' (ch. 26, ch. 28); the rushing feeling that knows a conversation before it comes (ch. 30); awake with it in a chair (ch. 40); Louis afraid of his eyes (ch. 48); a spike that dams it so that something builds (ch. 46). The patch's voice, at the end, wants him 'reasonably sane' (ch. 72).
