Coolie

Author of the Cookbook's 19th edition, from a planet called Qurux, whose deity notes Carl read in book 3 and whose end he reads in book 4: taken to a program on a ship in low orbit with a window open to his lost world, he hid bugbear paste in his boots to blow it with two admins aboard; the admins were holos and the forcefield held.

A sudden change of scenery reminds Carl of Coolie's last view (B5 ch. 17).

Through book 3

The deity notes in the miscellaneous chapter — celestial boons, indentured and involuntary summonings, all fatal to the summoner — and a second note on involuntary summonings as a sponsorship device (B3 ch. 32).

Through book 4

'If I am to die here, I want this to be my last view.' Three notes frame the chapter of Loita's death, and Carl's own note answers them: 'What I did today I did for you and for a little girl named Bonnie' (B4 ch. 18). Carl thinks of him again before the flood: 'Coolie would do exactly what you're doing' (B4 ch. 32).
