Justice Light

A skyfowl veteran of an earlier crawl and the Cookbook's eighth-edition author, an Origamist who killed a shopkeeper and became one, and the one Dante, a fellow Cookbook author, followed to the Trap Master guild without ever saying who he was: he readies the Posse's throne room, will not fight crawlers, needs the Gate of the Feral Gods for a project nobody knows, and stays behind at the end to snap the twine on a trans-dimensional trap that breaks the Nothing. 'I am not sorry.'

Series arc

In hindsight, after book 7

His first words in the series are a Cookbook note on the fifth floor: 'I made a mistake today. I killed an NPC I shouldn't have' — a trap-shop proprietor on a sixth floor who insulted him, the only trap shop on the floor, and a warning to keep the killing of innocents to a minimum (B4 ch. 32). Book 7 gives the note its author: a one-winged skyfowl of the White Cliffs who asked to serve his indenture as the shopkeeper he killed, whose brother in the book was erased for refusing an order he obeyed (B7 ch. 5, B7 ch. 56), and who ends the book alone on a burning floor snapping the twine on a trap that breaks the Nothing (B7 ch. 87).

As of book 7. Gone, not dead, says Rosetta: the one-winged Origamist stayed on the burning floor and snapped the twine on a trap begun the day Carl found the Gate, breaking the Nothing into the Halls of the Ascendency, Sheol and Scolopendra's lair. Porthus knew nothing of the project; the Apothecary did. Juice Box went into the Nothing believing he would follow. His last words on the floor: 'I am not sorry. Peace to you all, brothers and sisters.'

Where The line Note
Book 4, Ch. 32 I made a mistake today. I killed an NPC I shouldn’t have. […] He was a proprietor of a store selling trap supplies […] I needed what he had, but he insulted me, so I killed him. The eighth edition's note: the killing he served an indenture as the victim to atone for.
Book 7, Ch. 20 I think about him all the time. I have killed many NPCs since I arrived in this horror, but I have only killed one out of anger. […] The old me wouldn’t have done that. Snapped and just killed someone. His second note heads the Ramp-Up; his interlude tells the rest.

Justice Light in book 4 — The Gate of the Feral Gods

A Cookbook note by Crawler Justice Light, eighth edition: 'I made a mistake today. I killed an NPC I shouldn't have' — a trap-shop proprietor on a sixth floor, the only trap shop on the floor, and a warning to keep the killing of innocents to a minimum (ch. 32).

Justice Light in book 7 — This Inevitable Ruin

A one-winged skyfowl Origamist with black feathers and horn-tufts, who has prepared the throne room with his sluggalos and needs nothing from Carl's tables: 'Danger lives in what they can't see' (ch. 20, ch. 32). Dante's interlude gives his crime, a shopkeeper killed, and an indenture served as the shopkeeper he killed (ch. 5). His own interlude gives the rest — the keeper of the only trap store on the level, killed in anger after an insult; the ice elves, the order, his brother erased for refusing, his wing taken as a warning after his one refusal, and the deed done out of fear; a changeling relay under the FUPA; the deduction that Juice Box's people are touching gods; and a trap designed the moment Carl found the Gate (ch. 56). 'I need it!' when the Gate is lost (ch. 62); 'GET THE GATE BACK, AND IT WON'T MATTER' (ch. 78); he retrieves it from Paca's stomach with the sluggalos and sets it in place: 'Juice Box, it is ready […] The trap is already turned on. It has been turned on for days now' (ch. 81, ch. 84). Alone on a burning floor with Emberus, having lied to Juice Box, he snaps a piece of twine with a talon: a bijou trap and a demon trap fall into a permanent portal made from the Gate's winding box, four planes fold together, and the Nothing breaks. 'I am not sorry. Peace to you all, brothers and sisters' (ch. 87). Eighth edition of the Cookbook. Rosetta's brother; of his story's end, 'He'd never told anyone the specifics. Not even Porthus' (ch. 56).
