The series read as a whole.
- The arc of the series
- Carl and the machineThe series' central character arc is not Carl getting stronger — the game does that to everyone who survives — but the change in what he thinks he is fighting, and in what he has found to fight it with. The sections below ask those two questions of each book, in order, and answer them with the text: every quoted line is verbatim, and the evidence table at the end gathers them. Book 1 moves him from a man who entered the dungeon because there was nowhere else to go, to a man who has named his enemies and found the one lever he has against them.
- The voice of the dungeonThe dungeon has a second narrator. The System AI writes every item card, achievement, mob description and system message Carl reads, and its voice is not the same voice in book 4 as in book 1: what starts as a snarky operating system handing out generic achievements becomes, floor by floor, something personal, fixated, spiteful and finally unchained — a slide the books' own characters name and fear. This page traces that arc with the text: every quoted line is verbatim, and the evidence table at the end gathers them.
- Open threadsEvery long fuse the books have lit, with where it was lit and the latest thing the text has said about it. Status is open or resolved; the chapter after it is the last one that moved the thread. Each character's page carries the rows that name them. Read through book 4.
- The pantheonEvery god the books have named so far (through book 4), with what the text says of each, the relations the books state, and the mythology as it accumulates: the pantheon and the Celestial Ascendency, the Nothing and the feral gods, sponsorship and worship. A god with a character page carries its pantheon section there; the rest have god pages. Relations are quoted and verified; the mythology sections are written as of the book that supports them.
- TimelineThe series clock, read off the system messages: every chapter in which the text prints a floor countdown, a crawler count or a view count, in reading order. Per-book detail, with level-ups and skills: book 1, book 2, book 3, book 4.
