Arc
Pony
Level 55, Profane Vitiate, a satanic-goat tattoo, crying when called Pony (ch. 6), and suddenly Carl's best friend (ch. 7): the caprid whose mother is a vampire and whose family goat is a hellspawn. He names a town Number Four and loses it to a dinosaur (ch. 39). He kills an elite and is paralysed by his own class (ch. 44), Frozen and Fragile in a clearing, a second Ring of Divine Suffering on his hand, marked on his own mother, watching everything while she asks to be killed and dies in the sun on his shoulder (ch. 47). He wakes, eats his ring, screams silently (ch. 48), and vows (ch. 49).
The smart boy
Sponsored by the Plenty (ch. 43), level 70 by the party (ch. 57), he buys Seventh Floor Pole Position with thirty of his thirty-three hands without asking what it is (ch. 69), asks to join the party because he has been collecting clues (ch. 67), and smashes a potion into a blinded queen's face for the killing blow (ch. 76, ch. 77). Party leader for a day in exchange for a saferoom zap (ch. 75). In the epilogue he explains a floor from a talk show and his mother's boots, taps a stick with a hammer — 'You're a good boy, my sweet little Pony' — and the seventh floor explodes to dust (epilogue). He wants a memorial crystal for a goddess who is not supposed to be dead.
