Carl's mantra, first said to a safe-room ceiling after the You Monster! achievement and repeated whenever the game succeeds in making him feel like an asshole. The line the whole series will test.

Series arc

As of book 3. The mantra: four times in book 1, four in book 2, three in book 3 — after Brandon's message, after Growler Gary, in the trainyard — and then rewritten at the end of Carl's Cookbook entry: 'They will not break me. Fuck them all. […] But I will break them.' The essay Carl and the machine tracks every instance.

Four more times (B2 ch. 10, B2 ch. 11, B2 ch. 17, B2 ch. 25), and after the first always with 'Fuck you all'. The essay Carl and the machine has the book-2 rows.

Through book 3

Three times in book 3, and then rewritten at the end of Carl's Cookbook entry: 'They will not break me. Fuck them all. […] But I will break them' (B3 ch. 3, B3 ch. 26, B3 ch. 32, B3 ch. 34).

Through book 4

Six times: after Ifechi's death, after 'Good boy', in the Cookbook after Loita, unspoken before a liaison, at the sight of a puppy used as bait — and the last, to the sky, is a pledge: 'One by one, I will break you. I will break you all' (B4 ch. 4, B4 ch. 13, B4 ch. 18, B4 ch. 19, B4 ch. 29, B4 ch. 34).

Through book 5

'I will break you all', for Langley (B5 ch. 25); 'Goddamn you. You will not break me', over a dying vampire (B5 ch. 47); 'You will not fucking break me', in the queen's grip (B5 ch. 73); and Donut's 'I think something inside of me has broken' (B5 ch. 77).

First said aloud to a safe-room ceiling in ch. 19, after the AI's You Monster! gave him twenty seconds of false comfort about the goblin babies and took it back: 'You might hurt me, or kill me, but you're not going to break me.' Whispered as a mantra after the laminak fairy screams that they were going to move to the third floor (ch. 33); thought at the Maestro's threats (ch. 42); thought again at the cheering crowds while Donut teaches Mongo to pounce (ch. 47): 'Fuck you all. You will not break me.' The book's claim about its narrator, made each time the game has just succeeded in making him feel like an asshole.

Said among the clowns to steady himself (ch. 10); at the sight of Signet entering the tent (ch. 11); over GumGum's body (ch. 17); at the door to the fourth floor (ch. 25). 'Fuck you all' is now attached to it every time.

"You're not going to break me" in book 3 — The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook

Into the training room after Brandon's message (ch. 3); before the first killing of Gary (ch. 26); in a trainyard of the dead (ch. 32); and rewritten at the end of the 25th edition: 'They will not break me. Fuck them all.' (ch. 34). Zev: the fans want his 'trademark line' more often, which line unsaid (ch. 13).
