Samantha's body

Princess Lunette's weightless golem in Carl's inventory, a fish tattoo made flesh, and Shi Maria's promise of a master pulpmancer in Larracos who could move Samantha in, though the mage's shop was in the city's drowned bottom levels and Carl thinks the mage most likely dead. Meanwhile the doll head's neck hole is deeper on the inside — gold coins, a badger's arm burned black, spider automatons and a teleport trap, and, for twenty seconds, Carl's head.

Series arc

Through book 8

The flesh golem was wasted, and Grigori lays out her options (B8 ch. 59); she proposes a prostitute named Vertical Smile as a body and shows off Sam Town, her room with a swing and a lava lamp (B8 ch. 68); of Grigori the fleshmancer entering Sam Town, 'He didn’t even gasp' (B8 ch. 70).

Through book 4

A decapitated Lika sex doll head possessed by the Withering Spirit of Psamathe: her first escape from the Nothing split her, and half her essence took refuge in the closest unoccupied naiad vessel (B4 ch. 24). Mordecai: the halves of a split soul 'will always try to reunite', but 'in a proper vessel' — and when that goes wrong, a withering spirit, not alive, not dead, haunting the object with very little power (B4 ch. 24). A trap: had the castle stood, she would have woken 'a full-powered minor deity' (B4 ch. 24). A withering spirit's head can be thrown five hundred metres per point of strength (B4 ch. 34).

Through book 6

Princess Lunette on the asphalt (B6 ch. 26); a pulpmancer under the water (B6 ch. 27); a neck hole deeper on the inside (B6 ch. 33, B6 ch. 57); Carl's head in it (B6 ch. 69).

Through book 7

Ghazi's letters, remembered: the Mad Dune Mage had tried to animate his doll with the Gate while Psamathe, 'trying to get her body back', used him (B7 ch. 5). When a war mage says they found and took the Scavenger's Daughter, Carl wonders whether that is Samantha's daughter (B7 ch. 83).

Samantha's body in book 4 — The Gate of the Feral Gods

A decapitated Lika sex doll head, chin chipped, possessed by the Withering Spirit of Psamathe: her first escape from the Nothing split her, and half her essence took refuge in the closest unoccupied naiad vessel (ch. 24). Mordecai: the halves of a split soul 'will always try to reunite', but 'in a proper vessel' — and when that goes wrong, a withering spirit, not alive, not dead, haunting the object with very little power (ch. 24). It was a trap: had the castle stood and the glass spell been cancelled, she would have woken 'a full-powered minor deity' (ch. 24). A withering spirit's head can be thrown five hundred metres per point of strength (ch. 34).

Samantha's body in book 5 — The Butcher's Masquerade

A withering spirit with a single hit point and no way to die short of a black hole, able to do nothing but roll and scream (ch. 22); face down on the training-room floor until Carl walks in (ch. 17); launched on a seeking missile like a bottle rocket (ch. 22).

Samantha's body in book 6 — The Eye of the Bedlam Bride

Princess Lunette's body lies on the asphalt: once a fleshmancer casts the proper spell, Samantha would zap into it and have a body again, and nobody knows what would become of the doll's head (ch. 26); the only one who could do it is a master pulpmancer in Larracos, whose shop is in the bottom levels and who is most likely dead (ch. 26). Astrid is meant to come and deal with a very drunk doll head that will not leave the bar, and takes the main stairs instead (ch. 32); the neck hole is deeper on the inside (ch. 33, ch. 57); a pickaxe swung by a goddess bounces off her like a kick ball (ch. 66); Carl's head goes into it for twenty seconds (ch. 69), and he lets go of her onto a burning beam (ch. 70).

Samantha's body in book 7 — This Inevitable Ruin

Ghazi's letters, remembered: the Mad Dune Mage had tried to animate his doll with the Gate while Psamathe, 'trying to get her body back', used him (ch. 5). When a war mage says they found and took the Scavenger's Daughter, Carl wonders whether that is Samantha's daughter (ch. 83).

Samantha's body in book 8 — A Parade of Horribles

The flesh golem was wasted, and Grigori lays out her options (ch. 59); she proposes a prostitute named Vertical Smile as a body and shows off Sam Town, her room with a swing and a lava lamp (ch. 68); of Grigori the fleshmancer entering Sam Town, 'He didn’t even gasp' (ch. 70).
