Lexis

Odette's associate producer, a thin not-quite-human woman with a tablet who walks the guests to the couch and tells them where the invisible walls are.

Race and class, since book 1: Human

First appears: Book 1

Series arc

As of book 8. Odette's After Hours staffer, on loan to Borant as Zev's assistant while orbit belongs to the Open Intellect. In an unwatched minute she tells Carl where Victory is, that Katia is in contact, and that a confused third party guards the kinder facility; a child's image on her pad drains her face. After the stampede she holsters a gun she did not fire; the ratings are the highest ever.

Through book 1

Odette's producer, present at both interviews (B1 ch. 27, B1 ch. 48). A fixture of the between-floors routine rather than a character yet.

Through book 2

Walks Katia through the return procedures (B2 ch. 26). Still a fixture.

Through book 3

Lexis, on Odette's show, is caught between Odette and Loita in the epilogue (B3 ch. 35).

Through book 4

A shotgun in a tent in Seattle: kills a saccathian, captures a null, shoots Brad and lets him bleed, cubes Bea and the cat (B4 ch. 35).

Through book 5

'Ten minutes, Odette' (B5 ch. 18). She has them seated on the couch as the show starts (B5 ch. 19) and, in the green room during the one-minute hand-off from kua-tin to Valtay control with no sniffers online, is Odette's deniable mouth: the queen is a country boss, new and unseen, therefore a repurposed human, and the party will end in a battle designed to zero out the top crawlers (B5 ch. 20).

Through book 6

Counts the minutes on Odette's confession and gasps once (B6 ch. 37).

Through book 8

Zev's assistant now, on loan from Odette's show while orbit belongs to the Open Intellect. In an unwatched minute in the greenroom she tells Carl where Victory is, that Katia is in contact, and that a confused third party guards the kinder facility — then a child's image on her pad drains her face (B8 ch. 27). After the stampede she holsters a gun she did not fire; the ratings are the highest ever (B8 ch. 29). The horribles are 'strangely thin, like Lexis' (B8 ch. 91).

By book

Lexis in book 1 — Dungeon Crawler Carl

The first human from another world Carl meets (ch. 27): five foot five, head three-quarters the width it should be, blonde bun, tablet, a voice like a cartoon. She runs the green room, explains the holodeck rules and the invisible walls (ch. 28), is sent out of the room when Odette wants to talk (ch. 29) — 'Plexis' — and nearly loses a finger putting a bow tie on Mongo (epilogue).

Lexis in book 2 — Carl's Doomsday Scenario

On Odette's boat again in the epilogue, taking Katia through the return procedures so Odette can talk to Carl alone.

Lexis in book 3 — The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook

Odette's assistant, wringing her hands between a shouting host and an admin who keeps barging in (epilogue).

Lexis in book 4 — The Gate of the Feral Gods

In Seattle in the freezing rain with a shotgun and a translator in her clothes: kills Gennrik through the chest, captures Sadir, shoots Brad going for the pistol and lets him bleed out, knocks out a settlement, and cubes Bea for Odette and the cat for Borant's walk-on bounty. 'My name is Lexis […] I am here to take you to safety' (epilogue).

Lexis in book 5 — The Butcher's Masquerade

'Ten minutes, Odette' (ch. 18). She has them seated on the couch as the show starts (ch. 19) and, in the green room during the one-minute hand-off from kua-tin to Valtay control with no sniffers online, is Odette's deniable mouth: the queen is a country boss, new and unseen, therefore a repurposed human, and the party will end in a battle designed to zero out the top crawlers (ch. 20).

Lexis in book 6 — The Eye of the Bedlam Bride

Odette's assistant, the only person really in the studio, whispering with Zev (ch. 35); on the couch beside Carl with her ever-present tablet, silent, counting the minutes and gasping once (ch. 37).

Lexis in book 8 — A Parade of Horribles

Zev's assistant now, on loan from Odette's show while orbit belongs to the Open Intellect. In an unwatched minute in the greenroom she tells Carl where Victory is, that Katia is in contact, and that a confused third party guards the kinder facility — then a child's image on her pad drains her face (ch. 27). After the stampede she holsters a gun she did not fire; the ratings are the highest ever (ch. 29). The horribles are 'strangely thin, like Lexis' (ch. 91).
