Essay · Book 2, Carl's Doomsday Scenario

The arc of the story

Carl's Doomsday Scenario is one floor — the Over City — and three quests, none of which Carl meant to take. Book 1's rhythm was survival; book 2's is entanglement. Mordecai's rule for the floor, laid down at the town gate once the circus is behind them, is "no quests, no elites, kill mobs," and the plot is Carl in three quests anyway: once because Signet takes Donut, once because GumGum, a weeping orc, asks for help and turns up murdered, and once because the system names Carl, Donut and Katia the hosts of an event quest. Each reason is hard to argue with, and each quest ends somewhere the book did not seem to be heading: a boss cured instead of killed, half a magistrate's building gone, an explosion caught in a glass case.

The book-level entities: Carl, Princess Donut, Mordecai, Tsarina Signet, Miss Quill, Katia Grim, The Over City.

Act I — The jury room (Chapters 1–3)

Race and class, once, forever. Donut stays a cat and cons Mordecai into being her manager (ch. 1); Carl refuses the AI's Sasquatch and takes Primal and Compensated Anarchist, the slow build (ch. 2). The Over City is explained: a stage set on a story-book volcano, printed NPCs with wiped memories, guards with a death penalty, night (ch. 3). Eight days.

Act II — The Show Must Go On (Chapters 4–12)

Knives from a window, a quest tab, and Mordecai drunk within twenty minutes (ch. 4). The party scouts a circus they were told to leave (ch. 5, ch. 6). Tsarina Signet, an Elite with living tattoos, charms Carl and tries to bleed him for a spell (ch. 6, ch. 7); when he breaks his date she takes Donut hostage under Water Lily and makes him her champion (ch. 8). He kills a roller-skating bear alone (ch. 9), walks into a city boss's tent with a ticket, is ambushed by the smell of a circus and his mother (ch. 10), and — instead of killing Grimaldi — poisons him, bargains with the show's producers, cures him with his own blood, eats the worms, and talks the vine into un-banishing its daughter (ch. 11). Mongo holds the pyramid alone (ch. 12). "This is my family."

Act III — The town (Chapters 13–18)

Loot with catches (no pants, ever), a casino chip (ch. 13); the One-Eyed Narwhal and a weeping orc Mordecai refuses (ch. 14); the Desperado Club, Quint's tenth-floor warning, Pustule's bombs (ch. 15, ch. 16). GumGum is murdered and a city elf loses his head (ch. 16); the fan boxes deliver Bea's photo and a jai-alai scoop (ch. 17); Donut declares the quest theirs. Carl plants dynamite in Miss Quill's shelves and is launched onto a roof by an exploding corpse (ch. 18).

Act IV — Danger Zone (Chapters 19–20)

A cat-washing machine, a quokka, a Sac princess, a worm-driven pop star, Hekla live (ch. 19). Donut ruins a comedian; Carl gives the boiling-frog speech; two minutes later the Skull Empire pulses the wrong trailer and Manasa dies in their place; the Valtay blow the royal yacht to dust, Queen Consort Ugloo and the Maestro believed aboard. Carl suspects a set-up that serves Borant, and Mordecai bans all talk of the outside (ch. 20). Then a temple of acorn- eating elves, a dwarf with a rolling pin, a punched guard, a bitten-off arm, and "Mic drop."

Act V — The Sex Workers Who Fell from the Heavens (Chapters 21–24)

Katia Grim joins, a doppelganger with a badly sculpted face; the spy scroll becomes bait and half the magistrate's building goes (ch. 21). Carl is Magistrate (ch. 22); the meat locker of krasue, a Fireball at last, and Burgundy's dying testimony. Bautista's debt; ten sticks around the warehouse; Donut refuses to wait outside (ch. 23). Remex — not a lich, a battery, a former crawler — tells the story of Miss Quill's Final War, and the quest completes on the word "genocide" (ch. 24). Then the loudspeaker: an event quest, seven minutes, eighty crawlers, and the only shelter closed to Katia. Carl cages the soul crystal in a collectible's glass case and sits down with the cat. "I know she's dead."

Act VI — Doomsday (Chapters 25–26)

They are not dead. Carl's Doomsday Scenario goes into his inventory red-hot; the wild-magic countdown turns everyone's gear against them; the tiara is ash; Carl runs naked to the stairs, has Katia press the trigger at twenty seconds, and congratulates Mordecai on his freedom (ch. 25). On Odette's couch (epilogue): the last-second blast saved thousands and earned 83 Celestial boxes, vetoed; the leaderboard, with bounties; a deity sponsorship aimed at him; Hekla after Donut; "as long as you're still alive."

The shape underneath

Each quest inverts the one before. The circus quest ends by not killing the boss; the town quest ends by killing the boss early and having to hear the story anyway; the event quest ends by catching the explosion in a jar. Underneath all three is the thing Mordecai says at the bar — that you can't save them all — which GumGum's death and Manasa's bear out and Carl concedes on air. What the book sets against the advice is smaller than a refutation: Donut, who worries for Katia and keeps a promise Carl's first instinct would have dropped, and a memory from the circus of his mother planting trees and saying a little seed is all it takes. Then Odette reprices it all, with the numbers next to their names. Seeds and Staying human against The leaderboard.
