Car-sized passages under the plains for the Semeru's diggers: Carl drops twelve feet into one among two dozen dwarves, and a shout goes up in the dark: 'Destroy the heads!' (ch. 35). The diggers themselves — boxy, god-sized, spiral-armed — cannot cross naga rock, are torn in half by a god, drain the acid at the end, and go to the twelfth floor (ch. 22, ch. 68, ch. 75, ch. 86).
