Entertainment as machinery
Everyone Carl meets is a part of the same inexorable machine — Zev's phrase — from the AI that tailors loot to the narrative, to the PR agent who asks him to repeat a line without coughing, to the prince who buys doomed crawlers for a game show. The game is cruel because cruelty is what tunnels.

Entertainment as machinery in book 1 — Dungeon Crawler Carl
Stated by three people who profit from it. Odette: a for-profit venture in the entertainment industry, in which the loot serves the show (ch. 29). Zev: 'We are all parts of the same, inexorable machine. All of us are afraid' (ch. 36) — then, in Carl's head, a request for a retake (ch. 37) and a review of the Meadow Lark 'storyline' (ch. 44). The Maestro: the game in miniature, doomed crawlers guessing who dies for an audience of children (ch. 42). Carl's counter is that the machine has prices — he is expensive, and the prince is not — and his suspicion is that the AI made the sex tape.
Entertainment as machinery in book 2 — Carl's Doomsday Scenario
The machine is now visible from inside: NPCs printed and wiped (ch. 3), serials whose writers give their Elites plot armour and would gladly write in a popular crawler's death (ch. 7), a producer who agrees to a deal in thirty seconds (ch. 11), a trailer schedule public enough to aim a pulse at (ch. 20), a news anchor warning of 'real-life consequences for Borant' (epilogue). Carl works it — ratings for survival, a role for a life — and notes that the outrage over one singer is louder than the outrage over a planet (ch. 19).
