The river in Carl's head

A stream that has always murmured, louder in heat and muted only by rest, which the sixth floor names: 'The water is running.' It roars at the Grand Canyon in memory, at Bea's hologram, at the name Ferdinand, when Gideon's team dies because Carl asked. 'The sink is running. We're not supposed to let it run.'

First appears: Book 5

Series arc

As of book 7. A stream since the sixth floor, named in book 6 and offered a drain by orishas; in book 7 what it is: 'It had never been a river. Voices. Screams. Nightmares distilled to light.' 'Souls.' — flowing always down, and loud. A dwarf's voice in it says Carl is family now; Diah says one runs through the children's room and hurts to touch; and after the ring is gone Eris's laugh stays in it.
