The Cookbook's sixteenth author, the Worn Path Method's teacher; in book 8 alive — a skink trapped in the Pineapple Cabaret he built with Menerva, with a shop interface and a standing order for every cleaner bot, through which Li Na and 227 more leave the game. 'Herot was a cookbook author, and as such, I trusted them.'

Carl finds Herot's long essay at the back of the Cookbook and its 'Worn Path Method' — break the NPCs out of their reverie, be kind but firm — and has read only its first paragraphs (B3 ch. 17).

Through book 4

Carl slogs through the essay; Herot's warning that the NPCs who know they are in a dungeon are the more dangerous kind frames his reading of the changelings who want to reach the sixth floor (B4 ch. 10).

Through book 5

Herot's advice on choosing few, competent companions (B5 ch. 24) and on waking elites (B5 ch. 63) guides Carl; two notes print — a taxonomy of three castle types (B5 ch. 54) and the trolley-and-pebble image for derailing an NPC (B5 ch. 56).

Through book 6
