The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook
A recipe book to the showrunners and a manual to its holder, read in bathroom stalls: passed from crawler to crawler across seasons, each adding an edition — Carl's is the 25th — invisible to the showrunners, not to the AI, and erased if its holder tells anyone.
First appears: Book 3
Series arc
As of book 4. The title of book 3: the 24th edition of a hidden book passed between crawls since the fifteenth season, handed to Carl by a prize carousel, invisible to the showrunners but not to the current AI, priced at a page of his own notes. Book 4 reads it as a company of authors: Batbilge's last note, Herot on NPCs, Coolie's notes as a manual for killing an administrator — which Carl follows, and counts 'One.' — Drakea's kerchief and rants, Justice Light on what killing an innocent costs, Priestly on what caring too much does to a mind, Sinjin and Azin on worship, Rickard, and Porthus, whose second-edition note accepts 'the deal', a hundred seasons of servitude, and swears to end the horror. The Syndicate's liaison wants the source named and offers a Legendary box for it; Carl refuses. In the epilogue the second author is alive outside the dungeon, president of the pacifist NFC that sponsors Carl, 'going all in on him.' The 25th edition has begun.

Through book 3
The title. Chosen from nine prizes on a glint of light (B3 ch. 7); the 24th edition of a hidden book passed between crawls, invisible to the showrunners, priced at a scratchpad page for the 25th (B3 ch. 8). Its recipes, disguised as Carl's own discoveries, build the floor's rescue; its earlier authors — Forkith, Drakea, York, Coolie — become his company (B3 ch. 13, B3 ch. 15, B3 ch. 32). His entry closes the book (B3 ch. 34).
Through book 4
Batbilge's last note, Herot on NPCs, a debuff chapter, a burn-gel recipe steered to Mordecai (B4 ch. 3, B4 ch. 10, B4 ch. 29); Coolie's notes as a manual for killing an admin, and Carl's 'One.' (B4 ch. 18); the source a liaison wants named (B4 ch. 19); Drakea's kerchief, Justice Light, Sinjin, Azin, Priestly, Rickard, Porthus (B4 ch. 28, B4 ch. 30, B4 ch. 32, B4 ch. 33, B4 ch. 34); a Dr. Hu outside called Porthus, as its second author was (B4 ch. 35).

Where the text disagrees
- 22nd edition. Carl does not know Drakea's sex from the notes, then settles on 'he' without learning more. “he (or she, I wasn’t really sure) was also a crawler during the final naga-controlled season” (B4 ch. 28) “Drakea had more comments in the cookbook than anybody else. He commented on everything.” (B4 ch. 28)
How the book works
- What the showrunners see: a recipe book — “» The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook by Anonymous.” (B3 ch. 7)
- The hidden text appears when Escape Plan activates — “Hello, Crawler. As you’re about to find, this is a very special book. […] this book has found its way into your hands for one purpose and one purpose only.” (B3 ch. 7)
- How it passes between holders — “It has been passed down from dungeon to dungeon. […] It will disappear from your inventory upon death or retirement where it will find its way to a worthy recipient in a future crawl.” (B3 ch. 8)
- The price of an edition — “There is only one price for access to these pages. You must pass your own knowledge on.” (B3 ch. 8)
- The hidden second scratchpad page is the next edition — “Anything you add to this second page will be included in the 25th edition of this book.” (B3 ch. 8)
- Invisible to the showrunners, not to the AI — “While the true contents of this guide are invisible to the showrunners and to the viewers, it is not invisible to the current System AI.” (B3 ch. 8)
- Tell anyone and it erases — “if you tell anyone about the existence of this book, the information within will erase, and you will forever lose access to the hidden text.” (B3 ch. 8)
- Every recipe must look like the holder's own — “Every recipe, every secret, if utilized, must be presented to the outside world as if you are discovering this all on your own.” (B3 ch. 8)
- Recipes by chapter, then every edition's notes in order — “It was presented in curated chapters. All the potion recipes in one, all the explosives in another, and so forth.” (B3 ch. 8)
- It takes a different form for each holder: a sketchbook, a deck of cards, scrolls, a prayer projection — “I knew the cookbook manifested itself in different forms. For Allister, it appeared as a massive deck of playing cards from his home planet.” (B4 ch. 3)
- Who receives it: not clerics — “There was very little information about this stuff in the cookbook, likely because this was all cleric territory, a class that’d never receive the book in the first place.” (B4 ch. 32)

The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook in book 3 — The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook
The prize
Nine prizes on a carousel and a glint of gold leaf off a book with an anarchy symbol; the description says 'Chicken and Goblin recipes galore!' and Donut says they lost Mordecai for a recipe book (ch. 7). Then Escape Plan buzzes on the first page: 'Together, we will burn it all to the ground.' The 24th edition — potions, explosives, traps, secret societies, dungeon shortcuts — generated in the fifteenth season, passed from crawl to crawl, invisible to showrunners and viewers but not to the AI, erased if anyone suspects; the price is a second scratchpad page for the 25th (ch. 8).
The method
Carl reads in toilet stalls and presents every recipe as his own discovery: healing-infused smoke (ch. 8), the landmine plunger (ch. 10), the backpack (ch. 13), the Battery Fabricator's value (ch. 26), what a regenerating NPC means (ch. 26), the rules of portals (ch. 27) and of deities (ch. 32); he asks Mordecai questions he already knows the answers to so there is a record of asking. Mordecai admires the landmines and says nothing (ch. 30). Elle: 'It's like you have one of those teacher's editions' (ch. 34).
The hive
The book is company: Forkith's sister, Drakea's fire, York's hive of those who never meet (ch. 13, ch. 15). Carl begins writing on trains and at meals (ch. 27), has drawn the Syndicate's symbol and means to add the Bloom's dahlia (epilogue), and closes the floor with his signed entry in the 25th edition: the mobs and NPCs are victims and killing them is a mercy, and the twenty-four before him only talked. 'I will break them all' (ch. 34).
The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook in book 4 — The Gate of the Feral Gods
The manual
Batbilge's warning about the marketplace and Allister's note that it was his last (ch. 3); Herot on NPC awareness (ch. 10); a recipe for burn gel steered so Mordecai seems to invent it (ch. 17, ch. 22); a chapter on circumventing debuffs, excused as a charm-spell memory (ch. 29); ghost-killing bombs, potion lists. The Coffee Shop Author Kit gives Carl a third scratchpad tab, which hides the secret second (ch. 13), and a channel in a toilet stall (ch. 32). Orren wants the 'outside source' named; Carl refuses a Legendary box (ch. 19).
The authors
Coolie (19th), who blew a ship in orbit and wrote his last note there, short of breath and looking at Qurux — and whose notes on the trailer's forcefield make Loita's death possible (ch. 18); Justice Light (8th), on killing a shopkeeper (ch. 32); Sinjin (15th) and Azin (17th) on gods (ch. 30); Priestly (14th) on Larracos, and his last gibberish (ch. 33); Drakea (22nd), a bune, whose kerchief comes from a boss box (ch. 28); Rickard, whose pregnant wife vanished at the gate (ch. 25); Porthus (2nd), who accepted a deal (ch. 34) and is, it seems, the Dr. P. Hu the epilogue's woman calls 'Porthus' (epilogue). Carl's own entries: 'One.' (ch. 18).
