Shade Gnoll bartender of the Downward Dog at the interdiction depot, level 25, held at his own door by an invisible wall while Jumping Jen-Jen called him a coward and died. An indestructible NPC — a Cookbook tell — whose left hands start the rapid-response carts. Killed fourteen times for his left hands, and twice more when the carts come up a pair short; after the fifth, told why; 'Do your best to make sure it doesn't hurt.'

The AI plucked the bartender from Menerva's Backstage Death Maze on the seventeenth floor, which is why his level was so high (B8 ch. 55); it takes Grigori's body on the parade the way it took Gary's (B8 ch. 92).

'Growler Gary ain't no coward.' He tells the party about the carts; they discover what his hands are for (B3 ch. 26). Mongo kills him fourteen times for his left hands, and twice more when the carts come up a pair short (B3 ch. 27). When they come for the fifth hand, hiding in the back room with a spear, he asks why, is told, and asks for a drink when it is done (B3 ch. 26). Donut: 'He ended up being really brave […] Especially for a dog' (B3 ch. 27). The recap shows the killings without the reason (B3 ch. 29).
