Essay · Book 3, The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook

The arc of the story

The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook is one floor — the Iron Tangle, floor 4 — and one long problem: the stairwells are at stations 12 to 72, the trains only go up, and every crawler boarded past station 80. Book 2 was three quests; book 3 is a puzzle, and the book's rhythm is the puzzle being solved piece by piece by a party that has become a network. These pages follow the platform numbers, a little.

The book-level entities: Carl, Princess Donut, Katia Grim, Mordecai, The Iron Tangle, The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook, Hekla, The Rev-Up Vitamin Shots.

Act I — The rules of the floor (Chapters 1–6)

A moving Moscow Metro car, a bounty, a new class in six minutes, and a Protective Shell used as a bulldozer (ch. 1). Station 83 gives the sign, the saferoom, a Grulke Mordecai and the AI's answer to Borant's veto: coupons for three level-three personal spaces, joined into a level-five space with a two-hour bed and a training room (ch. 2, ch. 3). Brandon's death arrives in a folder called Messages from deceased Crawlers (ch. 3). Then the floor is learned the hard way: a book trade with a mole man and the first train fights (ch. 4); Vernon the conductor's loop and a suitcase of fire ants (ch. 5); Banshee Station, stoned rabbits, a control sigil, two robots scrapped for science, and Zev's verdict that the audience wants Katia dead (ch. 6).

Act II — The Cookbook and the crash (Chapters 7–12)

The Prize Carousel puts Chaco in a room with Mordecai; Mordecai throws a chair and is gone for seven days; Carl picks a recipe book on a glint of light and reads on its first page, "Together, we will burn it all to the ground" (ch. 7, ch. 8). Without a manager: Elle and Imani transformed at the Desperado Club, Donut's first skull, Elle's primes, Tito's wheel (ch. 8, ch. 9). Landmines derail an ochre train and Gore-Gore climbs out to explain the abyss gate — then fights, and Carl comes within ten seconds of a war god by accident (ch. 10, ch. 11). Sponsors: the Valtay for Carl, two princesses for the others. Katia loses four fingers and plots a route, and Carl pulls a war mage's head through Donut's hole (ch. 12).

Act III — The Nightmare and the yard (Chapters 13–20)

Katia carries a ton and a quarter in an Ugly-Ass Backpack; the Valtay's pill lets Carl see through portals (ch. 13). Carl is hit by the Nightmare Express, drives it, and steals it (ch. 14); the abyss shows every train thrown away and the souvenir hat as the key (ch. 15); the yard is a breached fence of Festering Ghouls, a gremlin eaten mid-wave, and a Human Resources associate who, Carl suspects, has never seen her apartment (ch. 16, ch. 17). Bautista's four hundred meet Terminus. The stairwell rooms are found empty and humming; Katia hands Carl a PVP coupon with his own name on it; station 60 is an empty platform (ch. 18). Frank Q gives Carl a ring and the reason Maggie killed her daughter (ch. 19); a submarine, a script Carl refuses, Chris killing Frank at a bar, and thirty women in Carl's house (ch. 20).

Act IV — Hekla (Chapters 21–25)

Brynhild's Daughters come for their lamb and for a cowcatcher, and the cowcatcher was Katia's idea (ch. 21). On the front of a Vermillion train through a horde of ghouls, Hekla shoots Katia twice with invisible bolts; Donut's goggles see it (ch. 22). Eva says the cruel thing in Katia's own voice, Katia's Rush misses her, and Hekla dies against the wall — the first bounty of the season, level 24 to 37 (ch. 23). Three clockwork Heklas hold the door; Carl reverses a thousand people out of station 101 and explains to a baker with two daughters what she was for (ch. 24). Seven hundred hats in twenty minutes; Katia on the team for good; a recap billed as a tribute to Hekla that ends by cutting Katia's accident into a murder; Zev, in person, saying goodbye without saying so (ch. 25).

Act V — The end of the line (Chapters 26–30)

Growler Gary's hands, fourteen times (ch. 26); six carts singing Billboard hits into the pit, a train bomb, and the Krakaren hatching from a stage-three corpse (ch. 27); a mimic scooped by accident, six hundred through the abyss gate on foot, six hundred hats laid at Donut's feet (ch. 28). Bautista's beanies, Katia's riot shield and one bolt for a god's eye, a recap that makes Gary's killing a horror, Mordecai's return and a train's worth of blood (ch. 29). Mordecai reads the map as the Syndicate's logo and Katia folds it into a noodle (ch. 30).

Act VI — Self-destruct (Chapters 31–35)

A portal hung from a crane over the hatch in station 36 drains the eruption that fills every other stairwell room (ch. 31). Prepotente through a hole in the floor; a god summoned on purpose and a hand around a numb foot (ch. 32). The Death Challenge: the Maestro alive and wearing Grull, a mimic halved, a decoy Carl, a mantaur in pieces, a god ejected with a second to spare (ch. 33). Brandy and Tizquick take the Nightmare down; Carl hits 41; Agatha goes down the ramp ahead of Carl; the 25th edition's signed entry (ch. 34). Loita replaces Zev, Odette is muted at Eva and at Chris, and the wheel says Air: the Dirigible Gnomes' Wasteland Fortress (epilogue).

The shape underneath

Book 2 ended by pricing the family; book 3 tests whether the price is worth paying to strangers. Every mechanism on the floor — the loop, the addiction, the wiped employees, the ghoul conveyor — is a machine for making the living disposable, and the book's answer is a network: chat lists, shared maps, a train driven the wrong way with a thousand people on it, and seven hundred hats handed over in twenty minutes by people who could have sold them — "There is hope for us. Not a lot. But it's there." Against that, the people who use people, and the book lets one of them say exactly what for: "You were being useful. We weren't really going to kill you. We just wanted Carl's famous temper to flare." Katia, used by everyone, ends the book with the season's first bounty claimed and on the team for good, carrying the mantra Carl handed her on the way to a pho shop: "Don't let them break you." Carl ends it with a manager who slapped him and a Cookbook with his own words in it, and the words are the book's last turn. The mobs "are just as much victims as we are." Killing them "is actually the best thing we can do for them." And "I will break them all." Staying human against The mobs are victims against Entertainment as machinery; a demon in a boiler had already put the question the entry answers: "we shouldn't be enemies in this."
