Mordecai

The tutorial guide assigned to Carl and Donut: a former crawler, born skyfowl, who chose Changeling and reached the eleventh floor of his own season, now serving out an indentureship as a shapeshifting NPC in a guild room with his mother's ashes and a photograph of his brother. He is bound by rules about what he may say, and he says as much as he can.

Arc

A Canadian in a snowsuit and a raccoon hat this floor, level 50, whose alchemy table now reads a potion's recipe off the potion (ch. 2); he makes Glory Bound into a rehab and a trap for a spider (ch. 16), brews earplug potions by the gallon (ch. 23), lines up hundreds of Black Nimbus balls for a floor about to be 'neck deep in gods' (ch. 45), and announces one salve aloud while brewing another because he knows he is being watched (ch. 19). He reads Anne of Green Gables to Ruby in what he thinks are his last hours (ch. 70), explains the Ceremony of Chaos and a ball of swine made out of everyone (ch. 66), theorises robot flies (ch. 81), and cuts Louis's chest open under the non-combatant code — 'what I'm aboot to do is a surgical procedure' (ch. 84). He cannot touch Huanxin Jinx, so he flicks the tip of a crossbow bolt built with his mother's ashes — a funeral rite — loads it into the crossbow on Donut's back, says goodbye to Katia, and walks out (ch. 86). 'But I think I gained more. Thank you, Donut, for setting that up' (ch. 87). Ruby goes to the twelfth floor without him (ch. 85).
