Mongo

The pet Donut chooses from the kobolds' menagerie on the second floor — a seven-inch, pink-feathered 'Mongoliensis' that bites her nose and fights anything it sees. Bonded as her Royal Steed hours before the floor closes. Odette supplies the translation: velociraptor.

Race and class, since book 1: Mongoliensis

First appears: Book 1

Series arc

As of book 3. Donut's velociraptor: a pet reward in book 1, waist-high by the end of book 2, full-grown at level 15 on the second day of book 3 and level 26 by its end. He has a saddle from the fans, an Earthquake ability, and the job — because the interdiction carts want a gnoll's hands and Katia's gnoll form stalls at 98% — of killing Growler Gary fourteen times, and then twice more. Borant considers him its property.

Through book 1

Chosen in B1 ch. 46, bonded in B1 ch. 47, identified as a velociraptor in the epilogue. Everything about him is prospective: level one, seven inches, 'fully grown at level 15,' and Odette's warning that the nose chomps will not be adorable when he is. The series will grow him.

Through book 2

From level 3 to 12 in eight days; from turkey-sized to almost as tall as Carl's waist; from a nose-chomper to the thing that held the pyramid alone all night (B2 ch. 12). Fangs that spark and poison, a carrier, a bond with Donut that survives a salamander, a dwarf's arm and a lavender rinse. Odette's warning is now a fact: he is no longer adorable when he bounces.

Through book 3

Mongo reaches level 15 and full size on the second day — pony-high, thirteen feet with the tail — and gains Earthquake (B3 ch. 7); he is level 26 by the end of the floor. A fan box gives him a red-and-blue saddle, which Donut rides through a wall in the trainyard (B3 ch. 7, B3 ch. 33). Because the interdiction carts want a pair of gnoll hands and Katia's gnoll is only 98% accepted, Mongo is given the job of killing Growler Gary fourteen times (B3 ch. 26), and twice more when the carts come up a pair short (B3 ch. 27). Zev's reminder: 'dungeon-born pets are considered Borant property' (B3 ch. 25).

By book

Mongo in book 1 — Dungeon Crawler Carl

Won from the kobolds' pet reward room in ch. 46 over Carl's preference for the brindle grub — a seven-inch raw-chicken dinosaur with pink feathers, red-tagged, hostile to everything and most of all to Donut's nose. The description says a Mongoliensis is never tamed, only respected, and that reaching level 15 is as likely as a West Virginia cheerleader reaching eighteen a virgin.

The bonding takes the rest of the floor (ch. 47): Mordecai explains that pet-class mobs stay level one until bonded; Donut teaches him to unzip a grub; dog commands work except 'stay'; his dot goes white after his first kills and orange — Royal Steed — when Donut decapitates a vespa to save him. The whole process, for whatever reason, is 'endlessly amusing to the general public'. In the epilogue Odette supplies the translation Carl had missed: velociraptor.

Mongo in book 2 — Carl's Doomsday Scenario

Level 3 and pink-feathered at the Pug (ch. 5); leaping twenty feet from a standstill (ch. 12); waist-high at level 10 (ch. 12) and level 12 by the elf fight (ch. 18). The floor's set piece for him is the night alone: left to guard an unconscious Donut inside a pyramid of junk, he holds off a swarm of street urchins until both of them are pincushions and his health is deep in the red — 'You saved Donut' (ch. 12). Fang Caps make his bite spark and poison (ch. 14); a pet carrier lets him rest and keeps him out of the Desperado Club (ch. 14); Clockwork Triplicate gives him clockwork friends who carry dynamite, spy scrolls and howls onto rooftops (ch. 14, ch. 21). He eats a salamander and a dwarf's arm, twice (ch. 20), bites krasue heads in a muted room (ch. 22), and, watching his own recap montage, bounces as a mastiff-sized dinosaur who grunts now instead of squeaking (ch. 14).

Mongo in book 3 — The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook

Level 15 and full-grown by ch. 7 — pony-high, thirteen feet with the tail, Earthquake on a jump — then 23 by ch. 26 and 26 by ch. 31. Immune to the cornets' Queasy (ch. 6); thrown by Gore-Gore with one backhand (ch. 11); a saddle he hates and a rider he throws onto the alchemy table (ch. 10); two clockwork copies lost testing a third rail, one to the rail and one to a train (ch. 10). He runs the track with Donut aboard, 'REALLY, REALLY FAST' by her report (ch. 14, ch. 15), kills Growler Gary fourteen times face first (ch. 26), dances in a room of blood (ch. 29), and carries Donut through a wall to Carl (ch. 33). 'Dungeon-born pets are considered Borant property.' 'Mongo is not anybody's property. This is an outrage!' (ch. 25)
