Character · Book 8, A Parade of Horribles
Mordecai
The tutorial guide assigned to Carl and Donut: a former crawler, born skyfowl, who chose Changeling and reached the eleventh floor of his own season, now serving out an indentureship as a shapeshifting NPC in a guild room with his mother's ashes and a photograph of his brother. He is bound by rules about what he may say, and he says as much as he can.

Arc
A Moon Reaper this floor — a fifteenth-floor janitor the princes of hell fear — which is really a shadow mimic in 'an impossible combo'; the hood falls and a prophecy comes out for each of them, once, and again unbidden: 'The Oak Fell lives up to her name' (ch. 7, ch. 25, ch. 61). He wants Rend out of the safe room (ch. 6), brews a bard potion and a compound that skirts cooldowns (ch. 39, ch. 56), designs the pet-carrier-in-a-cleaner-bot exit and lectures until Elle stops him (ch. 55, ch. 61), names Dong's curse a sapient weapon's (ch. 59), and warns that the whole thing is 'so far off the codex' the system may refuse it (ch. 55). On the eleventh he is an animistic spirit in the table Samantha sits on, unable to speak without a mouth (ch. 88, ch. 89); 'I hope you do, you coward murderer' — to Chaco (ch. 88).
