Essay · Book 8, A Parade of Horribles

The arc of the story

A Parade of Horribles is two floors in two parts. The tenth, Horrible One, is Don't Come in Last: eighty-seven chapters of seven heats — a food truck with a plastic tommy gun, a driver a heat, last place dies and its garage attendant with it, from the fourth heat, a team whose vehicle or mount is destroyed loses its containment instead of losing outright — designed so that every lost team is refilled from another heat until crawlers race crawlers, and three teams enter the seventh with one to leave. The eleventh, the title part, is twelve chapters and three hours: a parade of floats down a yellow-brick road lined with the masked dead of a vanished civilisation, the system AI telling the history of the universe in four parts, and an arena where Carl summons the dungeon boss on purpose. Book 7 ended with the Nothing broken; book 8 ends with the gods loose in the galaxy, the tunnels in the AI's hands, twenty-three crawlers reduced to nineteen, a level-1 centipede in Carl's party, and the Ascendency an hour away.

The book-level entities: Carl, Princess Donut, Hedy, Dong Quixote, Corcunda (Corky and Porky), Penelope, Li Na, Eris, Akuma, The Pineapple Cabaret, Plan Carl, The nine-tier attack, The Parade of Horribles, Primal engines, The Scavenger's Daughter.

Part 1 — Horrible One

Heats one to three: on rails (Chapters 1–33)

Carl is married before he lands: Princess Chandra invoked Widow's Rights and owns everything he and Donut earn (ch. 1). The wheel gives a Big Shot Chicken truck; Cascadia bubbles "Why won't you let me die?" over the loudspeaker (ch. 2). Heat one is a tow — two awakened bugbears who race for a real place to live (ch. 4, ch. 5). The safe room between heats gives Mordecai a reaper's form and a prophecy, Donut radiant claws, a matched champion's set and the AI's first rant on what a hero is, and Carl a cobra-headed box of Rishi's garbage (ch. 7–ch. 10). The cul-de-sac has neighbours — a fox in a bear's garage, two womantaurs with a half-mantaur gimp who is Dong's lost lover — and a quest to reunite the halves (ch. 12, ch. 13). Heat two puts a child at the wheel, a unicorn's cannon into a rival at the green light, and Carl into a province boss's pouch in a joey's skin he cannot take off: last place (ch. 17– ch. 22). An invoice from a diner not yet open offers an escape plan signed Akuma (ch. 23). On Plenty of Plenty Carl asks the Plenty's leadership live whether the public knows the gods have escaped, and Harbinger is turned inside out for raising a gun (ch. 27–ch. 29). Heat three is straight downhill through migrating skulls to the skull of Tem, which Carl explodes with his feet from the hood: first place, and the end of the joey (ch. 30–ch. 33).

Heat four: the Cabaret (Chapters 34–53)

Eris sits on a meat cart and offers protection for devotion; Carl snatches her coin from the air and has picked its fifth side, a swirl on his palm (ch. 35). Akuma, muted, frozen and one-testicled, tells the truth about the Pineapple Cabaret — a pocket dimension for awakened NPCs behind a seventeenth floor two former crawlers have rebuilt every season, infested now, closed to anyone who worships a god — and lies about why two teams must die (ch. 37, ch. 38). Heat four runs a jungle and a water park with a pit stop between, where the Tigrans of One Fine Pig run down Team Helix in the street and Carl, after denting their door with his fist, dissolves them with two silent traps (ch. 44–ch. 47). A dead toad with a caved-in head drives; the finish barrier kills Lucienne through the windshield (ch. 48–ch. 50). At the line Lucia blinks and relays a goddess's words, then turns into a frightened girl named Azra, Mehmet Or's daughter — the children are in the cold with Chalchiuhtlicue, who kills children (ch. 51, ch. 52). Carl takes the pig (ch. 53).

Heat five: the Corcunda quest (Chapters 54–67)

Li Na, poisoned and killing whole heats with her dreads, is a Changbi who cannot worship a god: she goes first — into a pet carrier, into a cleaner bot, sold to Herot's standing order — and a cactus under her Deadly Bloom will say whether she lived (ch. 54, ch. 55, ch. 61). Carl and Donut sing "Take on Me" through a brawl and a fire and Carl alone is let into the hidden guild where Porky lies with a stuck zipper (ch. 56– ch. 58). Dong is dying of a curse from the sock that kept him alive; the womantaurs leave early, so the reunion happens in the race (ch. 59, ch. 60). In a factory of toddler cocaine and molten steel, upside down on a ceiling track, a fleshmancer joins the halves while Dong holds them; Grull arrives for the rejoined man, and Dong rides him into the god on a lance drawing every screw in the room: "Vale" (ch. 63–ch. 66). The quest pays two stand-ins to the arena; the cactus blooms one flower (ch. 67).

Heats six and seven: the drain (Chapters 68–87)

Two hundred and twenty-seven go to the Cabaret; a goodbye party unmasks the soother tourist as a Syndicate soldier sent to kill Imani and Louis (ch. 69–ch. 73). Heat six shrinks the racers into an apartment building where every flat is a what-if of a crawler's life — Tran's parents, Louis's mother, Imani's family, Prepotente's mother at a New York piano — peopled by shells with their eyes sewn shut that burst into Khepri's scarabs; the AI calls it a snapshot of its mind (ch. 74, ch. 75, ch. 77). Carl detonates a bomb in his friends' beer to be sure of not coming last (ch. 76). 715 of 989 take deals; the final heat still puts friends against friends and allows NPC-only heats, and the AI, screaming, releases Scolopendra's first attack: Carl is a dachshund (ch. 79–ch. 82). Karl blows a shaft to the roof; Britney kills Osvaldo; Donut crushes a Cadillac; and the Desperado Club's new "Nothing" — a stasis portal behind a croupier who is a shadow mimic — takes Chris, Britney and then Louis (ch. 83–ch. 87).

Part 2 — Horrible Two

The parade (Chapters 88–92)

Twenty-three crawlers; ninety minutes to build floats in five themes; Carl leaves the party and sews on a patch that sends a fatal blow to a party member (ch. 88–ch. 90). The road is lined with horribles — memories of dead Primals from the Eulogist, "I am her, and she is me" — and the AI, in a borrowed fleshmancer, tells four parts of five: a warring people who resolved to become one mind, hunted the refusers, weaponised the collective against all life, and left the Eulogist asleep, the Apothecary alone, and a self-destruct system the Syndicate flipped like a light switch (ch. 91, ch. 92). Pony sings; Carl promises vengeance to the galaxy; the sluggalos fall on the elites (ch. 92).

The arena (Chapters 93–98)

"I choose Scolopendra": the dungeon boss, level 500, whose death or abandonment fires every remaining attack (ch. 93, ch. 94). Carl phases into her guts with a sapient pig strapped to his chest and his father's gun at her head, meets Emberus at human size in the club inside, names Khepri as Geyrun's killer, leaves the faith, and then names himself — both bluffs, for Carl does not know who killed Geyrun (ch. 95). The blow lands on the pig; Taranis kills his brother (ch. 96). Eris swaps every inventory and says four of her mother's five pieces are present; a pet biscuit in a banger sphere splatters the boss, and Taranis leaves with Krakaren and Samantha (ch. 97); Prepotente finds his crystal stolen (ch. 98). Hedy is dead; the eighteenth-floor door is open; every survivor joins one party — and the wrong biscuit makes Scolopendra a level-1 crawler who boops Carl's nose (ch. 98).

Epilogue (Chapter 99)

A historian names the nine-tier attack's stages — Control, A Parade of Horribles, This Inevitable Ruin, Bedlam — and tells the fairy tale's ending, a princess who kills the all-tree and everyone she loves. The AI tells every screen it is eternity and starts the Ascendency with Outside Intelligences among the players. Louis wakes in Sheol with a leech on his skin, Forkith's welcome, and a message from Samantha (epilogue).

The shape underneath

The book's argument is a mirror. On Donut's crupper the AI writes 'I am just like you in that tower, committing atrocities because you have no other choice' and 'It’s heroes and villains all the way down'; later it writes 'I am just like you, on rails', and wonders whether to stop worrying about the small decisions and focus on 'Big Changes in a Big Way'. At the arena Carl's narration finishes the thought: the horribles are Primals, and so is every mob and god — 'Primals. All of them. All the way down.' So when Carl tells the galaxy 'This is our revolution, motherfuckers', he is refusing the rails the AI has already confessed to sharing with him, and the book closes on that AI telling every screen it is eternity. The tally keeps the cost: twenty-three left where there were 5,501.
